Federal Councillor Albert Rösti to attend the UN Climate Change Conference
Berne, 19.11.2025 — On 20 and 21 November, Federal Councillor Albert Rösti will represent Switzerland at the 30th UN Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Belém, Brazil. At the conference, Switzerland will advocate for all states, especially those with high greenhouse gas emissions, to submit ambitious reduction targets aimed at implementing the Paris Agreement.
In accordance with the Federal Council’s mandate of 12 September, Switzerland will also promote the recommendations of the 28th Climate Change Conference, including tripling use of renewable energies and doubling energy efficiency by 2030 and phasing out fossil fuels by 2050.
In general, Switzerland aims to strengthen international investment in climate protection and involve the private sector more actively. With this in mind, it is seeking to form an alliance with other countries at COP30 to strengthen the CO2 market.
Mr Rösti will join environment ministers from other countries at the ministerial-level negotiations on 20 and 21 November. He will also chair the Environmental Integrity Group (consisting of Georgia, Liechtenstein, Mexico, Monaco, South Korea and Switzerland) and sign bilateral agreements on emission reduction projects with additional partner countries. Several bilateral talks are also planned.
Note for journalists: On Friday, 21 November, shortly before noon (local time), Federal Councillor Rösti will hold a press briefing to present his statement on COP30. The exact time and location will be announced nearer to the date.
