2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development

2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development

The 2030 Agenda provides a comprehensive framework to address challenges to sustainable development at global and national levels. The 2030 Agenda comprises of 17 Sustainable Development Goals and calls for a more integrated approach of the United Nations Development System (UNDS) in support of partner countries.

Switzerland takes part actively in the 2030 Agenda governance mechanisms, most notably the High Level Political Forum (HLPF) under the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) that gathers UN member states annually in July to review progress on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. In 2022, Switzerland presented its second Voluntary National Review on achievements and challenges in supporting the implementation of the SDGs both domestically as well as internationally. Every four years, the HLPF takes place under the auspices of the General Assembly, the SDG Summit, with an aim to provide renewed guidance and impetus to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.

Sustainable Development / Sustainable Development Goals

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) combine social and economic development with ecological sustainability. They also address issues such as peace and inclusive societies, the rule of law and good governance, all of which are essential to sustainable development. Contrary to the Millennium Development Goals, the SDGs are universally applicable. Switzerland is also called on to implement the goals both at national level and through its international cooperation. Furthermore, incentives need to be created to encourage the private sector to make a greater contribution to sustainable development.
